This is the plain average of your semester SGPAs, which is what most Indian universities use. A few weight each semester by its credit total instead — if your university does, the two answers will differ slightly.
How the average is taken
A CGPA is the mean of your semester SGPAs. Add them and divide by the number of semesters — four semesters of 8.2, 7.6, 8.8 and 8.0 give 32.6 ÷ 4 = 8.15.
When that answer is slightly wrong
Some universities weight each semester by the credits it carried, so a heavy semester counts for more than a light one. If your semesters carried different credit loads and your university weights them, the plain average above will be close but not identical to the figure on your transcript. The transcript is the one to quote.
